The synoptic weather map typically depicts isobars, which are lines of equal pressure. Evidence of the South Atlantic high being ridging can be seen through the spacing of these isobars. If the isobars are closely packed together in one area and then gradually begin to spread apart in the direction of the ridge, this indicates an area of high pressure expanding outward, portraying a ridge. Additionally, the contours of the isobars will curve upward, illustrating an upward bulging structure characteristic of ridging. Another piece of evidence is the wind direction depicted on the map. In a ridging area, the winds tend to flow outwards from the high-pressure center. If the wind vectors are diverging from the high-pressure system's center and showing a clockwise rotation (in the Southern Hemisphere), this supports the presence of ridging associated with the South Atlantic high.
