Extra Insights

Before Nigeria became independent, the country was ruled by white men, primarily British colonial administrators who held the reins of power until Nigeria's independence in 1960. This colonial rule laid the groundwork for Nigeria's diverse political landscape, as it structured the regions and ethnic groups’ interactions in ways that would have lasting implications for post-independence governance. The first state creation in Nigeria occurred during the military regime following the coup in 1966, a time when the country was moving from a federal system of regions to a state-based framework. This shift was a significant response to ethnic and regional tensions, as it aimed to create a balance of power among Nigeria’s diverse groups, albeit amid great turmoil and the backdrop of a civil war that would unfold shortly afterward.
