Spontaneous generation is the now-debunked theory that living organisms could arise from non-living matter without any biological parent, while biogenesis posits that life comes from pre-existing living organisms. Simply put, one suggests life can spring forth from the void, while the other firmly believes that life begets life! One famous experiment that supports biogenesis was conducted by Louis Pasteur in the mid-1800s. He used two swan-necked flasks filled with nutrient broth—one flask was left open while the other was sealed. Over time, the open flask became contaminated with microorganisms, whereas the sealed flask remained clear and free of life. This setup elegantly demonstrated that microorganisms, not the broth itself, were responsible for the development of life, thus strengthening the case for biogenesis!
