Scientific Notation
Scientific notation is a way of expressing numbers that are too large or too small to be conveniently written in decimal form.
Decimal Notation | Scientific Notation |
---|---|
600 | 6102 |
666.66 | 6.6666102 |
-6000 | -6103 |
0.0066 | 6.610-3 |
In scientific notation, nonzero numbers are written in the form:
Number10n
Basic Operations
Given two number in scientific notation, multiplication and division are performed using the rules:
x1 = m110n1
x2 = m210n2
x1x2 = m1m210n1+n2
x1 x2 = m1 m2 10n1-n2
Example
6.6710-69.65108 ≈ 64.410-6+8 = 6.44103
6.6710-6 9.65108 ≈ 0.6910-6-8 = 6.910-15
