The Indian Removal Act was passed during the presidency of Andrew Jackson in 1830. This controversial legislation aimed to relocate Native American tribes living east of the Mississippi River to designated “Indian Territory” west of the river, resulting in significant displacement. The act led to the tragic event known as the Trail of Tears, where thousands of Native Americans were forcibly removed from their ancestral lands. Many suffered from harsh conditions during the journey, which resulted in great loss of life and cultural dislocation, showcasing the heavy toll of government policies on indigenous populations.
