Once air enters the lungs, oxygen molecules diffuse across the thin walls of the alveoli, tiny air sacs where the exchange of gases occurs. This movement is driven by the difference in concentration: there’s more oxygen in the alveoli than in the blood vessels surrounding them. Oxygen then enters the capillaries, where it binds to hemoglobin in red blood cells, allowing it to be transported throughout the body!
